Museum Center at 5ive Points Wins Two Awards of Commendation from

Tennessee Association of Museums

CLEVELAND, TN: The Museum Center at 5ive Points won two Awards of Commendation from the Tennessee Association of

Museums at their recent annual meeting in Murfreesboro March 21st. The awards were received on behalf of the Museum staff

and board by Executive Director Lisa Simpson Lutts.

The first award was in the category of Special Events. It was given for the Grand Re-Opening Celebration held in June 2006. The day-long event celebrated a renovation of the River of Time exhibition, the re-furbishment of the Museum’s Cultural Center with new carpeting and wall coverings and the installation of seven Children’s Discovery Stations in the permanent exhibition, River of Time. The event brought 450 people to the Museum during the day to enjoy live music, children’s activities, food and living history portrayals. The awards committee cited this event as an excellent model for a seven-year-old museum creating new spark and interest in the community. Staff members Lollie Bekkevold, Nadine Bennett and Ken Cagle were instrumental in winning this award.

The second award was in the category of Permanent Exhibitions. It was given for the seven new Children’s Discovery Stations which were designed and installed in the River of Time exhibition. The Museum staff saw the need to engage young children while they accompanied their parents through the exhibition on the history of the Ocoee Region. Interactive Discovery Stations are placed throughout the exhibition matching the historic theme of the adult-oriented River of Time exhibition. While these hands-on Discovery Stations are geared to young children, the staff has seen many adults enjoying them as well. The Discovery Stations were sponsored thanks to a grant by the Cleveland Daily Banner. Lollie Bekkevold, Curator of Collections, oversaw this award-winning project.

Since opening in September 1999, The Museum Center at Five Points has received twelve awards from the Tennessee Association of Museums.
